Appearing on BBC Politics East Midlands, Alicia Kearns MP called for the Government to legislate to protect Rutland's ceremonial county status under Local Government Reorganisation.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
"Without legal protections, Rutland will cease to exist as a county once local government reforms have taken place.
"I am doing all I can to ensure the Government legislates to protect Rutland’s ceremonial county status.
"Their position is that they refuse to legislate until Rutland is 100% confirmed as not continuing as its own independent council. It’s a completely unnecessary worry and delay for us, because RCC didn’t even consider asking for us to stay as we are, the opposite - they asked for us to be fast-tracked for absorption.
"This isn’t about politics, it’s about preserving our character and identity."
