The Government has today committed to a ban on the depiction of non-fatal strangulation in porn after months of Alicia Kearns MP campaigning for this.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
"Violent pornography has normalised strangulation during sex, despite it being considered the second most common cause of strokes in women under 40. When we were in Government we made non-fatal strangulation a specific offence. This ban on pornography is the next step in protect protecting women and girls.
"Sadly it hasn't been straightforward to get here. The Government voted twice against my amendments to ban non-fatal strangulation in porn, however they have now accepted it must be banned. It shouldn’t have taken months of delay and pressure to get here, but I’m relieved the ban will now become law.
"No one should not be told there is such a thing as safe choking. It is time we put an end to the misogynistic pornography normalising it, and I'm relieved this will help do that."
