Breaking News: The Government has been forced to think again on Local Government Re-Organisation
Following new legal advice, Ministers have paused and are being forced to review their plans to re-organise local councils for Rutland, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire.
This is a major development and creates serious questions about whether the process and decisions taken so far were fair or legally robust.
Crucially, what this means for residents is that:
- All plans are on hold
- Our Councils remain as they are indefinitely
- Local elections in May 2027 will now go ahead for our existing councils, not new ones
- For now, Rutland’s ceremonial county status is safe
- Angela Rayner has explicitly confirmed she will be reconsidering the expansion of the City of Leicester
We’ve fought these plans every step of the way, arguing that mega-councils drawn up by distant cities are wrong for our communities, and thousands of you have made your voices heard.
Pressure works. This fight is not over and I’ll keep fighting for our communities, including presenting our petition against the proposals to No 10 and in Parliament on Monday.
This has been a total waste of councils’ time and money, and has caused enormous anxiety for our communities and communities across the country. Most importantly it’s been a total distraction from the work councils need to get done serving our communities.
You can read the letter from the Minister for Local Government, Devolution and Regional growth here. (This is the Lincolnshire letter, which is near identical to the one received for Rutland and Leicestershire)
