The Government has announced it will punish people convicted of a fly-tipping offence by adding three penalty points to their driving licences, despite the Government voting against an amendment calling for this in 2025.
The amendment laid to the Crime and Policing Bill by Alicia Kearns MP and Matt Vickers MP almost a year ago called for three penalty points to be added to the driving licence of a person convicted of fly-tipping.
Alicia wrote a joint letter to the Farming Minister, Daniel Zeichner MP, on 23rd April 2025 urging him to adopt amendments, including their amendment to toughen punishment for fly-tippers.
In the last Parliament, Alicia successfully campaigned to increase fines for fly-tipping from £400 to £1,000.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
“Last year the Government voted against my policy to put points on the driving licences of fly-tippers. I’m relieved they’ve now recognised it’s the right thing to do.
“Unfortunately, fly-tipping is a persistent and damaging reality for our rural communities, so I hope this policy will act as successful deterrent to this scourge on our countryside.”
