Following Alicia Kearns MP’s successful petitioning of National Highways to close central reservations on the A1, the first eleven closures have now been confirmed between Little Ponton and South Witham.
Traffic orders will be published w/c 17th March and if there are no objections, work can get under way to close the gaps and complete in the coming weeks.
This is the first phase in National Highways’ safety improvement plan with larger gaps across Lincolnshire and Rutland and between Blythe and Stamford, being considered for closure in the next phase.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
“I am relieved National Highways has recognised the concerns of so many of our communities by taking this important step.
“This is an important first step, but there is still more still to be done including the closure of the larger central reservation gaps, but I’m pleased we are securing such good traction and progress to make the A1 safer.”
Phil Shaw, National Highways Route Manager, said:
“This is the first milestone in a complex legal and technical process which will ultimately improve safety along the A1 across the whole region.
“We have listened to the concerns of local people and developed a long-term plan for this busy road which demonstrates our commitment to improving safety here for both road users and local people.
“There has been a lot of support for closing these gaps during our conversations with local communities.”
