A graduated driving licence (GDL) would place restrictions on new drivers who have recently passed their test e.g a limit on the number of passengers in the car.
A GDL aims to allow new drivers to gain initial driving experience whilst under ‘lower risk conditions’ before they are issued a full licence.
Government statistics suggest as many as a quarter of newly-qualified drivers are involved in an accident during their first two years on the road, with 400 young UK drivers sustaining serious or fatal injuries each year. A GDL would aim to reduce this number of early-stage accidents, and the number of young people losing their lives on our roads.
